At Functional Craft, we like opposable thumbs.

Functional Craft  was born out of the indie craft/handmade movement in Chicago during the 1990' s and is coupled with Permaculture principles and ethics that are so needed today.

Functional Craft  features D.I.Y. Projects that incorporate reused, recycled, upcycled and natural materials.  We teach ourselves and our children to use our hands in useful and profound ways.  These are "working crafts" to build skills and re-learn some of our forgotten arts.   These skills, and the memories will stay with your children their whole lives.

Functional Craft  teaches that the process of creating; Where do my materials come from? How are materials supplied?  Are they toxic? and Can they be obtained locally?  is at least AS important as what is ultimately created, or what skill is obtained.

Functional Craft's  focus is on the first community we all have, the family.  Cooperative learning is a foundational block of all families, and Functional Craft takes that to heart.  Please bring your children, your grandchildren or sponsor a child in the neighborhood.

Please check back soon, there are some good things on the horizon.

*** Need some ideas on how to work with re-purposed or natural materials? Functional Craft can tailor a variety of informational workshops specific to teachers, students, or group leaders.  Each Workshop will have lots of "hands on" time as well.
